The principle that an arbitrary set of circumstances (eg the positions of stars in the sky at ones birth, a random dealing of Tarot Cards, etc.) can suggest to the diviner the hidden background of a given event and its likely outcome. Occultists believe that Divination is not "Fortune Telling" - the latter is hopelessly fatalistic, but the former allows for the existence of free will.
